Wolfsburg climbed to fifth place in the Bundesliga on Sunday, thanks to a late brace from Jonas Wind that secured a thrilling 4-3 victory over Mainz at the Volkswagen Arena.
The Danish forward, who replaced Patrick Wimmer at halftime, struck twice in the final minutes, scoring in the 84th minute and again in the fourth minute of stoppage time. This victory extends Wolfsburg’s unbeaten streak to eight matches.
The match featured a dramatic back-and-forth, with Mainz initially dominating the first half and taking the lead three times. Paul Nebel opened the scoring for the visitors in the 11th minute, but Mohamed Amoura quickly equalized for Wolfsburg just eight minutes later.
Mainz regained the lead shortly before halftime when Jonathan Burkardt found the net from close range. However, an own goal by Andreas Hanche-Olsen, deflecting a shot from Tiago Tomas, leveled the score again 12 minutes into the second half.
Nebel scored his second goal midway through the second half, putting Mainz ahead 3-2. Yet, Wind’s late heroics turned the tide, with his first goal a powerful strike from 18 yards out, followed by a header from a deep cross for his second.
Hoffenheim Ends Losing Streak with Draw
In another Bundesliga match, Hoffenheim halted a three-game losing streak with a 1-1 draw against Freiburg at home.
After suffering defeats in the Europa League, Bundesliga, and German Cup, Hoffenheim found themselves trailing when Matthias Ginter scored for Freiburg midway through the second half.
However, 19-year-old Tom Bischof equalized with a low shot into the net 17 minutes from time, marking his second goal in three games. The draw leaves Freiburg in seventh place, tied on 21 points with Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund, while Hoffenheim sits in 14th place.
