Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League was reduced to seven points following a dramatic 3-3 draw against Newcastle on Wednesday. The result allowed Chelsea to climb to second place after a commanding 5-1 victory over last-place Southampton, while Arsenal secured third with a 2-0 win over Manchester United.
In a crucial match at St James’ Park, Liverpool’s hopes of an eighth consecutive win in all competitions were dashed when Fabian Schar scored a 90th-minute equalizer. Despite twice coming from behind, including a late goal from Mohamed Salah, Liverpool was unable to hold onto the lead. Coach Arne Slot expressed mixed feelings about the performance, noting, “We were outstanding in the second half, but we were not good enough in the first half. Maybe 3-3 is what the game deserved.”
Chelsea took advantage of Liverpool’s slip, with their third consecutive league win putting them ahead of Arsenal on goal difference. The London club dominated Southampton, with goals from Axel Disasi, Christopher Nkunku, Noni Madueke, Cole Palmer, and Jadon Sancho. Southampton briefly leveled through Joe Aribo, but the match shifted decisively after Jack Stephens was sent off before halftime.
Arsenal also capitalized on Liverpool’s draw, handing new Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim his first loss with a 2-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium. Jurrien Timber and William Saliba scored from corners in the second half, helping Arsenal close the gap on Liverpool despite remaining in third place. Midfielder Declan Rice commented on the team’s resilience, stating, “You get written off, but we stuck together as a group.”
Meanwhile, Manchester City ended a seven-game winless streak with a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest, reducing the gap to Liverpool to nine points. Kevin De Bruyne, making his first start since September, scored one goal and assisted another, showcasing his importance to the team. Guardiola expressed relief at the victory, saying, “We needed it. The club, the players, everyone needed to win.”
City’s win was marred by injury concerns for Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake, with Guardiola noting, “Nathan doesn’t look good. We’ll see tomorrow.”
In other matches, Everton secured a crucial 4-0 win over Wolverhampton, moving further away from the relegation zone. Ashley Young and Orel Mangala put Everton in control before two own goals from Craig Dawson sealed the victory. Aston Villa also ended a lengthy winless run with a 3-1 victory against Brentford, marking their first win in nine games across all competitions.
