Despite the NFL’s ongoing efforts to reduce the risks associated with football, concussions continue to pose a significant threat to players. Washington Commanders running back Austin Ekeler recently shared his alarming experiences with concussions during an interview on WJFK-FM in Manassas, Virginia.
Ekeler, who was placed on injured reserve on Saturday, recounted the memory loss he experienced following two concussions in the 2024 season. According to Ben Standig of The Athletic, Ekeler was injured during the Commanders’ 34–26 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on November 24. He revealed that he has no recollection of walking off the field and only remembers being in the ambulance en route to the hospital.
This was not Ekeler’s first concussion this season; he also suffered a similar injury in Week 3 while playing against the Cincinnati Bengals, which sidelined him during his team’s 42–14 victory over the Arizona Cardinals on September 29. Standig reported that Ekeler is still experiencing lingering effects from his most recent concussion.
At 29 years old, Ekeler has rushed for 355 yards and scored four touchdowns this season, but his health remains a priority as he navigates the challenges of recovery.
