Kazakh tennis player Alexander Bublik has openly acknowledged the challenges he faces against Daniil Medvedev, describing the Russian as a significant obstacle in his career. Ranked No. 33 in the world, Bublik has encountered Medvedev six times, suffering defeats in each match and managing to win only one set during their encounters. This solitary set victory occurred during the second round of the 2021 Toronto Masters.
In contrast, Bublik has found success against another top player, world No. 2 Alexander Zverev. The former world No. 17 boasts a favorable record against Zverev, winning three out of their four meetings. His only loss to the German came at the Monte Carlo Masters on clay, where Bublik was ahead by a set before Zverev rallied to win in three. Notably, Bublik’s victories over Zverev include triumphs in the finals of the 2022 Montpellier tournament and the 2023 Halle tournament.
During a recent appearance on the “Nothing Major Podcast,” hosted by retired American players John Isner, Sam Querrey, and Steve Johnson, Bublik was asked about players he dislikes facing. He candidly stated, “I think Medvedev owns me big time. Like big time. I’m not sure if I will ever beat him. I don’t know why it’s been like this since the juniors. I think I’ve never won a match against him. I think Sascha is my guy. I’m leading 4-1, I think. He’s the most enjoyable guy I’ve ever played with. I love playing Sascha. I don’t know why I have such a great feeling towards him. Every time I play well, he’s laughing when I show up late or do something silly, and he’s like, ‘Okay, but still you’re going to beat me.’ We have this mutual joke going on. But Daniil owns me for sure. Big time.”
This year, Bublik faced Medvedev at the Madrid Masters but did not have the opportunity to compete against Zverev.
