According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Holmes has attracted interest from multiple teams during free agency, with some considering him for a starting pitcher role. The New York Mets are among those teams, looking to strengthen their rotation following a strong finish to last season and a postseason push.

At 31 years old, Holmes has made 307 relief appearances throughout his career, starting only four games—his last start occurring in 2018 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Over the past four seasons with the Yankees, he earned two All-Star selections and recorded a 2.69 ERA along with 74 saves in 220 appearances.

Holmes could follow in the footsteps of recent relief pitchers who have successfully transitioned to starting roles, including San Diego Padres’ Michael King, San Francisco Giants’ Jordan Hicks, and Kansas City Royals’ Cy Young candidate Seth Lugo. With a diverse arsenal of pitches, including both fastballs and breaking balls, Holmes is well-equipped for a starting position.

The Mets, under owner Steve Cohen, have already bolstered their pitching staff by signing right-hander Frankie Montas to a two-year deal on Sunday. Additionally, they continue to pursue Juan Soto, the top target in this year’s free agency market.
