Coach Discusses Rublev’s 2024 Struggles

Coach Fernando Vicente has opened up about Andrey Rublev’s battle with depression following a controversial incident at the Dubai Tennis Championships earlier this year. Vicente confirmed that Rublev sought psychological help, attending sessions several times a week, after experiencing a significant emotional downturn.

Rublev began the 2024 season on a high note, achieving notable results, including a title in Hong Kong and a quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open. However, his performance took a turn during the Dubai semifinals, where he lost control against Alexander Bublik, resulting in a disqualification after a heated confrontation with a line umpire. Following this incident, Rublev struggled on the court, posting a disappointing 1-4 record over the next six weeks, which included early exits at the French Open and Wimbledon.

“After Australia, I was confident we would have a great year. However, the situation in Dubai was unprecedented for Andrey. It completely derailed his focus and led to disastrous performances at Roland Garros and Wimbledon,” Vicente told Championat. “One incident ruined the season, prompting us to skip the Olympics, although he did manage to win the Masters in Madrid.”

After a shocking first-round loss to world No. 85 Francisco Comesana at Wimbledon, Rublev began intensive therapy, speaking with a psychologist three times a week. His return to form included a runner-up finish at the Montreal Masters and several quarterfinal appearances, including at the US Open. Although his overall performance in the latter half of 2024 was not remarkable, it represented significant progress given his earlier struggles.

“Yes, very deeply. We tried to support him and worked with the psychologist to help him remember where he started and the heights he has reached. This is a normal situation. As a coach, I also face many challenges throughout the year—family, personal issues—but we ended the season positively and look forward to next year with hope,” Vicente added.

Vicente also addressed Rublev’s personality, noting that the 27-year-old is well-liked in the locker room and by fans, often described as kind and approachable. However, Vicente acknowledged that Rublev can also exhibit intense emotions on the court, sometimes leading to self-harm. He explained that the Russian mentality often involves a perpetual dissatisfaction with achievements, which can contribute to these struggles. Vicente has sought advice from former player Marat Safin to help Rublev navigate these challenges.

“I’ve been working with Andrey for nine years now, and I understand the Russian mentality. There is often a sense of sadness and dissatisfaction with accomplishments. I ask Safin to share insights with Andrey to help him understand these feelings,” Vicente explained.

Reflecting on Rublev’s remarkable victory at the Madrid Masters, Vicente recounted how the player battled severe throat inflammation throughout the tournament. Despite his health issues, Rublev managed to secure the title, later diagnosed with a tonsil abscess, a potentially serious condition.

“Yes, he was sick all week. I can’t fathom how he won a tournament under such circumstances. He could barely breathe, and the night before the final, he slept on the floor with no energy. Yet, he won—I still can’t explain it,” Vicente recounted.

This victory underscored the pressure Rublev faces and how it impacts his performance. Vicente noted that Rublev’s relaxed approach during the Madrid tournament, free from self-criticism and excessive pressure, contributed to his success. “He didn’t waste energy on scolding himself because he could hardly speak. This mindset helped him throughout the second half of the season,” Vicente observed.

Looking ahead, Rublev remains focused on achieving a breakthrough in Grand Slam tournaments, as he currently holds an unfortunate 0-10 record in quarterfinal matches.
