Former eight-time Grand Slam doubles champion Nenad Zimonjic emphasized that Novak Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, is “a smart guy” who understands the strategic reasons behind adding Andy Murray to his coaching staff for the upcoming Australian Open. Djokovic’s announcement that he would be collaborating with one of his biggest rivals for the start of 2025 surprised many but also generated excitement about the potential dynamics of their partnership.
Despite the enthusiasm, some skeptics raised concerns about Murray’s lack of coaching experience and the fact that he recently retired from professional play just four months ago. However, Zimonjic, who has previously worked with Djokovic, dismissed these doubts as unfounded. He believes that Djokovic’s decision was not made for entertainment value but rather for its potential tactical benefits.
“Novak is very smart in making decisions, and his career is proof of that. Whenever he needed something special in terms of coaching, he reached out, and the results speak for themselves,” Zimonjic told Ubitennis. “Djokovic and Murray know each other well, having competed against and alongside each other since childhood. Their similar playing styles can create a beneficial dynamic. Tactically, Andy was one of the best, and he can provide different perspectives to help Novak.”
Zimonjic also noted that this coaching arrangement represents a new experience for Murray. He suggested that Murray’s past experiences with various coaches and his own journey as a player could prove valuable in this role.
In the interview, Zimonjic indicated that Djokovic and Murray might use the Australian Open as a trial period to evaluate their collaboration moving forward. Djokovic has expressed admiration for Murray, stating that he will be rooting for him to succeed in this new capacity.
