Zheng Qinwen Makes Change Before 2025 AO

Zheng Qinwen, the world No. 5, is set to enter the 2024 season without her coach, Pere Riba, due to his upcoming hip surgery. The two have enjoyed significant success since reuniting in late 2023, including Zheng’s victory at the Paris Olympics and appearances in the finals at both the Australian Open and WTA Finals, as well as her debut in the WTA top five.

Riba, who retired from professional tennis in 2018 following a hip injury, will be unable to accompany Zheng to the Australian Open. In his absence, the 22-year-old will work with renowned coach Dante Bottini.

According to Marca, Riba is expected to rejoin Zheng’s team in the spring, in time for the WTA 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami.

Reflecting on her relationship with Riba, Zheng noted the significant impact he has had on her career during their time together. Their first partnership lasted two and a half years, during which Riba helped her establish herself on the WTA tour. The current collaboration has led to remarkable growth, positioning Riba as a contender for the WTA Coach of the Year award.

Zheng expressed her admiration for Riba’s dedication, stating, “He always has a lot of passion for tennis. This is important. He really wants to be a good coach. Not many coaches on tour have this type of passion. Some see it as just a high-paying job, but there are a few who genuinely love tennis and want their players to improve every single day. I think he’s this type of coach,” she said during an interview in Riyadh.
