Arsenal’s goal-scoring prowess has returned just in time for the comeback of Martin Odegaard, marking a significant turning point for the team.
Since the international break, Arsenal has netted eight goals in two matches, including a commanding 5-1 victory over Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League on Tuesday. This win ties Arsenal’s record for the heaviest away victory in the competition’s history.
Odegaard, who had been sidelined for two months due to an ankle injury, rejoined the squad amidst a challenging period for Mikel Arteta’s side. During his absence, Arsenal struggled, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth and a 1-0 loss at Newcastle, which pushed them down the Premier League standings. The team also faced a 0-0 draw against Atalanta in the Champions League and a 1-0 loss to Inter Milan, where Odegaard made his return as a late substitute.
Since Odegaard’s return, Arsenal has gone unbeaten, with the goals flowing once again. Following a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest, the Gunners showcased their attacking flair in Lisbon, ending Sporting’s unbeaten start to the season. Odegaard played a pivotal role, contributing to the build-up of Arsenal’s first two goals, scored by Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz. He also won a penalty, which Bukayo Saka converted in the 65th minute, restoring Arsenal’s three-goal lead at 4-1.
Despite appearing to flex his leg after the penalty incident, Odegaard continued to play without issue until he was substituted in the 78th minute.
Mikel Arteta will be keen to avoid any further injuries to Odegaard as Arsenal aims to close the gap on Premier League leaders Liverpool, who currently hold a nine-point advantage over the fourth-placed Gunners after 12 matches.
