Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez demonstrated his growing confidence during a dominant 6-0 victory over Brest in the Champions League on Tuesday, marking the team’s largest away win in European competition.
After the referee awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area, Álvarez swiftly positioned himself to take the shot. “When I saw the free kick, I told Rodri (Rodrigo De Paul) that I felt confident with the shot,” he remarked. His confidence paid off as he curled the ball into the net in the 15th minute, marking the first of his two goals in the match. Álvarez later added another goal in the 59th minute, bringing his tally to seven goals in the last ten matches and three in his last three outings across all competitions.
Having joined Atlético from Manchester City after two seasons, Álvarez initially faced challenges, scoring only twice in his first ten matches. “It was a matter of time before we started connecting well with each other,” he said. “We have to stay on this path to keep improving.”
Ángel Correa also contributed significantly, netting two goals, while Marcos Llorente and Antoine Griezmann added one each.
“We know that in this format of the competition we need to keep adding the three points and scoring goals,” Álvarez emphasized. “It’s important to get the points and the goals.” Despite the impressive win, Atlético currently sits in 13th place in the 36-team league standings.
