Matteo Berrettini has declared Jannik Sinner the best player in men’s tennis, emphasizing that the 23-year-old’s humility matches his impressive skills on the court. Last week in Malaga, Sinner, currently ranked world No. 1, showcased his remarkable form in 2024, contributing significantly to Italy’s successful defense of their Davis Cup title with a 3-3 singles match record.
Sinner has had a stellar season, clinching eight ATP Tour titles, including his first Grand Slam victories at the Australian Open and the US Open, as well as the ATP Finals. His exceptional performance has resulted in a remarkable 73-6 record this year.
Despite his achievements, Berrettini noted that Sinner remains unchanged as a person. “He has proven he’s the best player in the world, and he’s also the most humble guy on the planet. His tennis is impressive, but it’s his off-court demeanor and relationships that truly make him special, which is why we now have two Davis Cup trophies back in Italy,” said Berrettini, the 2021 Wimbledon runner-up.
In the Davis Cup final against the Netherlands, Berrettini secured a victory over Botic van de Zandschulp in the opening match, followed by Sinner defeating Tallon Griekspoor 7-6 (2), 6-2 to seal Italy’s triumph.
Reflecting on his successful year, Sinner expressed pride in his team’s efforts. “It has been an amazing year. I’m very proud of the whole team. There is a lot of work behind it, and I’m very happy to hold this trophy again. Today was very difficult because anything can happen,” he remarked.
Sinner will now take time to rest before beginning preparations for the 2025 season and his title defense at the Australian Open.
