The Western Michigan Broncos triumphed over the Ball State Cardinals in straight sets to win the 2024 MAC Volleyball Tournament Championship on Sunday. Both teams had previously defeated higher-seeded opponents to reach the final.
First Set:
Western Michigan started strong, leading 7-5 early after a series of impressive rallies. The Broncos maintained their narrow lead, reaching the media timeout ahead 15-12. Ball State responded with a 5-0 run after the break to take a 17-15 lead. However, the Broncos regained control, prompting a timeout from Ball State as Western Michigan led 20-19. After the timeout, the Broncos continued their momentum, ultimately winning the set 25-21 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Second Set:
Ball State called a timeout after questionable calls put Western Michigan ahead 9-3. Another timeout followed as the Broncos extended their lead to 14-5. Western Michigan continued their dominance, reaching 20 points first and leading 20-10. The Broncos cruised to a 25-12 victory in the second set, putting them up 2-0.
Third Set:
Western Michigan started the third set with a quick four-point run, forcing a Ball State timeout. The Broncos, fueled by a loud home crowd, built a commanding 12-4 lead. As the set progressed, Western Michigan extended their lead to 20-9, silencing the Ball State fans. Fifth-year setter Logan Case played a pivotal role, holding up a number one sign as the Broncos reached set point at 24-12. The Broncos closed out the match with a 25-13 win, completing the sweep.
Post-Match:
Western Michigan’s victory marks the end of an outstanding season for the veteran team. Their effort throughout the year paid off with this championship. Ball State, featuring a young roster, will look to rebound in the coming season.
Logan Case was named MAC Tournament MVP after leading the tournament in assists and assists per set. Senior outside hitter Julia Marr led the Broncos with 14 kills on a .382 hitting percentage and five total blocks, both match highs.
With the conclusion of the championship, the 2024 MAC season comes to a close, capping a year filled with thrilling games and memorable moments.
