Morehead State opened the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) volleyball tournament with a dominant 3-0 sweep over Western Illinois on Sunday night in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Sophomore Amelia Nott led the Eagles with a season-high 13 kills, three service aces, and five blocks. Junior M.E. Hargan also contributed 13 kills, hitting .216.
The first set was a close contest, with both teams exchanging extended runs. Tied at 15-15, Morehead State surged ahead with a 7-0 run, taking a 23-13 lead. However, Western Illinois answered with a 7-0 run of its own to tie the set at 23-23. The Eagles won the set 26-24, thanks to a block by Irene Wogenstahl and Sydney Wyman.
In the second set, Morehead State took control early with an 8-0 run, moving from a 3-4 deficit to an 11-4 lead. The Eagles cruised to a 25-15 victory in the set.
Western Illinois started strong in the third set, leading 9-3. However, Morehead State responded with a 7-1 run to tie the set at 10-10. The Eagles closed out the match by winning six of the final eight points.
Elizabeth Ziegler and Brittany Wulf led Western Illinois with seven kills each. Western Illinois ends its season with a 17-13 record, including 11-7 in OVC play.
Morehead State will face Southeast Missouri, the OVC season champion and top seed, in the tournament semifinals tomorrow at 6:00 ET.
