Goh Jin Wei is determined to perform well at the China Masters in Shenzhen after taking time off from the European leg of the World Tour to recharge.
The world No. 40 will face a tough first-round opponent in Michelle Li of Canada, a former Commonwealth Games champion, when the Super 750 tournament begins tomorrow.
Jin Wei is in urgent need of a strong performance after suffering first-round exits in her last six tournaments.
A victory over world No. 23 Michelle would provide a much-needed boost of confidence for the Malaysian shuttler.
Michelle has been in good form, reaching the quarter-finals at both the Super 500 Arctic Open in Finland and the Super 750 Denmark Open in Odense last month.
Jin Wei’s coach, Nova Armada, believes she is ready for the challenge.
“Michelle is an experienced player and not easy to beat. Jin Wei must not underestimate her,” said Nova.
“Jin Wei has had quality preparation since the Olympics, and I am confident she is determined to clear this first hurdle in Shenzhen.”
Nova also noted that this draw offers Jin Wei a good chance to reach the second round, but she must first overcome Michelle to regain her confidence.
Jin Wei missed the Arctic and Denmark Opens to rest and focus on improving her fitness and game.
If she beats Michelle, Jin Wei is likely to face world No. 7 Han Yue of China, who has won both the Hong Kong and Arctic Opens this year.
