Kentucky Ends 9-Year Drought, Beats Duke

Kentucky basketball kicked off its season with a significant victory on Tuesday night, defeating Duke 77-72 at the State Farm Champions Classic in Atlanta. This win marks the Wildcats’ first victory over the Blue Devils in nine years, with their last triumph coming in the 2015 Champions Classic, led by the dynamic duo of Jamal Murray and Tyler Ulis.

Since that last encounter, Kentucky and Duke had faced each other just twice, including the memorable 2018 Champions Classic featuring Zion Williamson and a 2021 matchup where Paolo Banchero and Trevor Keels propelled Duke to victory. A win against a traditional powerhouse like Duke provides a substantial confidence boost, especially for a Kentucky team navigating a new coaching regime in the 2024-25 season.

Under the guidance of new head coach Mark Pope, who replaced John Calipari after his move to Arkansas, the Wildcats showcased a roster filled with fresh talent. Forward Andrew Carr, a transfer from Wake Forest, led the team with 17 points, while Oklahoma transfer Otega Oweh contributed 15 points and made a crucial steal in the game’s final minute.

Pope, who faced skepticism from some fans regarding his appointment, has effectively rebuilt the team through the transfer portal. On Tuesday, he utilized a rotation of 10 players, all of whom were new to the program this season. The only exception was reserve guard Collin Chandler, a freshman. Despite their lack of prior chemistry, the Wildcats displayed impressive teamwork, moving the ball efficiently and executing strong defensive plays against a talented Duke squad.

This victory is likely to elevate Kentucky into the top 10 of the AP poll, increasing expectations as they progress through their non-conference schedule. The Wildcats will face four mid-major teams in November, but December poses tougher challenges, including a road game against Clemson and a high-stakes matchup against No. 4 Gonzaga in Seattle. They will also compete against No. 21 Ohio State later in the month.

Though the season is still in its early stages, Pope appears to be establishing a solid foundation in Lexington.
