The BYU football team managed to preserve their perfect season on Saturday with a hard-fought road win against rival Utah. It was far from straightforward, as they had to overcome a significant second-half deficit. The game’s end was mired in controversy due to a defensive holding penalty on Utah on fourth down that kept BYU’s hopes alive, making for a chaotic affair.
Coming into the contest, BYU was favored, ranked #9 in the College Football Playoff rankings and sporting an 8-0 record. In contrast, Utah has struggled this year, especially after losing quarterback Cam Rising to injury again, yet they dominated the first half. They took a 21-10 lead into halftime after a strong second-quarter showing.
However, BYU’s defense stepped up in the second half, shutting out Utah. The Cougars clawed their way back, and in the final seconds, a controversial penalty led to a game-winning 44-yard field goal. Utah’s athletic director’s post-game comments got him fined $40,000. Despite the win, BYU still has aspects to address as the season progresses.
