When discussing the top young guards in the NBA, many tout Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards. But former All-Star Jeff Teague begs to differ. With Edwards’ Timberwolves at 6 – 4 and Mitchell’s Cavaliers on an 11 – win streak to start the season, Teague claims Mitchell is just as good, if not better. “Donovan Mitchell is better than AE,” Teague said. “Lowkey Donovan Mitchell is as good as AE. He can score as much as Edwards. AE talks more and is more likable, but Mitchell just gets the job done quietly.”
Edwards is seen as a bright young superstar, known for bold claims like stating Michael Jordan was the sole skilled player of his era. In contrast, Mitchell is soft – spoken and under the radar. Despite that, he’s been an All – Star for five straight seasons and has led his team to the playoffs every year since entering the league.
Looking at their stats, they’ve faced off four times with a 2 – 2 series split. Mitchell averaged 27.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.0 steals per game in those matchups, while Edwards had 22.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.0 steals. Mitchell also has better career averages in key areas and advanced metrics. Although Edwards is having a strong start this season with career – high scoring and rebounding, Mitchell may not need to carry as heavy a load in Cleveland. Overall, Mitchell is on par with Edwards and perhaps better in some aspects, yet lacks the marketability that’s crucial for superstardom.
