Wake Forest’s Defensive Pressure Stifles Michigan’s Scoring in 2nd Half

In the first half, Michigan’s explosive offense, seen previously against Cleveland State, seemed set to continue as shots rained from beyond the arc against Wake Forest. But a sharp contrast emerged. After going 8 – for – 17 from deep in the first half, the Wolverines managed only 2 – for – 16 in the second. In the initial period, they penetrated and found open 3 – pointers. Later, they struggled to get downhill off ball screens, failing to set up outside shooters.

Wake Forest’s defense had its own tricks. Like Michigan, they switch one through four, but added a unique element. Coach Steve Forbes noted that switching one through five, or more often one through four and hedging the five – man ball screen, confused the Wolverines. When Michigan’s center set a screen, the Deacons’ center hard – hedged, cutting off the ball handler’s lane. This forced the handler back and required complex defensive rotations, which Wake Forest executed well.

The Deacons’ improved rotations and increased physicality in the second half curbed Michigan’s paint penetration. Coach Dusty May admitted his team didn’t adjust to Wake’s ball screen coverage. With less access to the paint, Michigan’s kick – out threes dried up. Hedging demands defensive rotation, yet Michigan’s usually strong off – ball movement failed them. Coach May was puzzled as his team usually cuts well, but this time the ball stuck. Michigan had some good looks, but for various reasons, their shots missed. A 2 – for – 16 three – point half won’t win games. Michigan now has a new defensive look to prepare for after this loss.
