Ryan Nembhard thought his alley – oop pass to Khalif Battle was too high, but the 6 – foot – 5 Battle managed to grab it and slam it down emphatically. “It wasn’t that high,” Battle said nonchalantly after the win on Sunday. “I told him throw it high all the time. It was fun. Pass was better than the dunk.” This dunk electrified the McCarthey Athletic Center and gave Gonzaga the boost they needed to fend off Arizona State in the second half of an exciting game.
Braden Huff talked about Gonzaga’s poise compared to last season. “We had tough scoring moments in that game… but we locked in when needed. Last year’s new team took time to adjust. This year, with many returners and new guys fitting in well, the transition has been smooth early this season.”
Khalif Battle discussed his focus shift between halves. “I don’t focus on scoring. I focus on defense and winning plays. I know I can score, but doing little things for victory matters most.” Nembhard addressed defense, saying they need to take pride in one – on – one matchups. Battle also praised Michael Ajayi’s impact, highlighting his athletic rebounding that gives the team extra possessions and momentum.
