The Brawley High Wildcats girls volleyball team is gearing up to host the CIF-San Diego Section Division III semi-final match tonight, November 5th. They are coming off a strong performance, having defeated the Ramona High Bulldogs in the quarterfinals with a three-games-to-none victory last Friday.
Brawley head coach Lindsay Rubin expressed excitement about playing at home, stating, “Of course, we are thrilled to be on our home court and we know it’s an advantage and hope to take advantage of it.” She noted the good turnout at their last game, despite competing with the Bell Game, and anticipates a great crowd for tonight’s match.
The Wildcats, who are the second seed in the CIF-SDS Division III playoffs and co-champions of the Imperial Valley League, boast a record of 27 wins and 11 losses (7-1 in the IVL). They will face the eleventh-seeded San Diego Metro Eagles, champions of the South Bay League, who have a record of 16 wins and 20 losses (7-1 in the MSB). The match will take place at the Wildcat Gym at 6:00 p.m.
Tonight’s winner will advance to the CIF Division III Playoff championship match, set for Saturday night, November 9th, at Mira Costa College in Oceanside.
Brawley started the CIF D-III Playoffs last week with a 3-1 victory over the Mira Mesa Marauders on Tuesday, winning sets 25-20, 25-16, 24-26, and 25-10. They followed that with a quarterfinal win against Ramona, winning 3-0 with set scores of 25-16, 25-22, and 25-23.
Rubin highlighted the team’s performance, saying, “Mira Mesa came to life in the third set and we had a lull. It’s tough to keep intensity for five games, but the girls came back. On Friday, they had energy and kept it throughout the match with Ramona.”
Brawley is the only team from the CIF-SDS Southeastern Conference to reach the semi-final round, out of seven teams that entered the playoffs. The team is led by five seniors: Lindsey Casey, Kamryn Contreras, Bella Marmolejo, Destyni Perez, and Breauna Rebollar.
Rubin noted the team’s strengths, stating, “We don’t have any weak spots. Everyone contributes, and we have great chemistry. They bond on and off the court and are led by our five seniors who have experience and strong personalities.”
Ticket prices for tonight’s match are set by CIF at $14 for adults (ages 18 and over) and $9 for students and seniors (students ages 5-18, seniors age 60 and over). Tickets are currently available for purchase.
