The Delaware County Community College (DCCC) men’s basketball team is set to open its season on November 4. Head Coach Dwayne Saunders is optimistic about the 2024-2025 squad as they prepare for a challenging schedule in one of the nation’s most competitive intercollegiate regions.
The DCCC Phantoms boast several standout players, including Darrius Best from Eastern Wayne High School in Goldsboro, N.C., and Jabree Martin from Great Oaks Charter School in Wilmington. They also feature tough players Omar Davis and Tahmier Manning from Overbrook High School in Philadelphia. Anjillo Alicea, a returning player, is expected to play a key role this season.
Coach Saunders has high expectations for his team. “This is a highly committed group of student-athletes, and I am excited about their potential,” he stated. He added that their focus is on improving each practice and letting the outcomes unfold naturally.
Saunders, a Delaware County native, is in his second consecutive year as head coach. He previously held the position from 2010 to 2013, achieving a 55-22 overall record and winning the Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference (EPCC) Championship in the 2011-2012 season. He was named EPCC Coach of the Year that season after leading the team to a 24-2 record, marking the College’s first EPCC title since 1996.
The Phantoms will compete in the Eastern Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Region 19, which consists of 26 teams from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. This region is known for its high level of competition at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III level.
Home games for the Phantoms will be held at FiDonce Gymnasium, located at the former St. James High School (215 E 21st St., Chester). This venue is less than 20 minutes from the College’s Marple Campus in Media. Coach Saunders encourages fans to attend and support the team. The season opener will be on November 4 at 7:00 PM against Lehigh Carbon Community College. The home opener is scheduled for November 14 at 7:00 PM versus Williamson College of the Trades.
