World number six Jessica Pegula has withdrawn from the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Spain, set for November. The United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced that Ashlyn Krueger will replace her on the American team.
The USTA did not provide an explanation for Pegula’s withdrawal. She was the highest-ranked player in the team and a finalist at the recent US Open.
Pegula has already qualified for the WTA Finals in Riyadh, taking place from November 2-9. Her last match was three weeks ago in Wuhan, where she lost in the third round to China’s Wang Xiyu, though she did reach the doubles final.
The US team will face Slovakia in the first round of the Billie Jean King Cup Finals on November 15. The winner will advance to play Australia in the quarterfinals.
Joining Krueger on the US team are Danielle Collins, Peyton Stearns, Taylor Townsend, and Caroline Dolehide. Krueger is currently ranked 65th in singles and 64th in doubles.
