Elina Svitolina and Zheng Qinwen are scheduled to compete in a charity match at Melbourne Park on January 8, just days before the Australian Open. The event aims to raise funds for Ukrainian children, continuing Svitolina’s advocacy for her home country amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The former world No. 5, who has been vocal about the conflict and fundraising efforts, will face off against current world No. 5 and Paris Olympics gold medalist Zheng. Both players have opted out of tournaments leading up to the Australian Open.
Svitolina, recovering from a foot injury that required surgery in mid-September, is preparing for her return at the Australian Open but chose not to compete in any events beforehand. Zheng, initially set to kick off her season at the United Cup, decided to withdraw, citing a need for additional rest and recovery after a demanding 2024 season. On December 22, she announced her decision to forgo the tournament, stating, “I need a few extra weeks of rest, recovery, and good training to get ready for the new season.”
Despite the charity match likely not showcasing their full competitive strength, fans can look forward to witnessing these two prominent players meet in Melbourne ahead of the Grand Slam. Notably, this will be their first encounter on the WTA Tour.
