The Spanish league announced on Tuesday that FC Barcelona has failed to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations, jeopardizing the club’s ability to retain playmaker Dani Olmo.According to the league, Barcelona “did not present any alternative” proposals to adhere to the required regulations, which are necessary for the club to “register any player starting January 2.”
Barcelona was in need of approval for an additional financial lever from the league after a judge ruled against the club on Monday, marking the second consecutive legal setback prior to the year-end deadline.Without judicial support or league approval, Olmo’s contract cannot be registered beyond the end of 2024. The Spain international joined Barcelona from RB Leipzig in August.
Reports indicate that Barcelona had reached an agreement to sell VIP seats at the revamped Camp Nou for €100 million ($104 million). This revenue could potentially enable the club to register both Olmo and forward Pau Víctor. Despite missing the end-of-year deadline, Spanish media suggest that Barcelona remains optimistic about securing a deal with the league for Olmo’s registration.
Each club in the Spanish league operates under a salary cap determined by various factors, including revenues, costs, and debts, typically amounting to around 70% of a club’s revenue.
Barcelona has faced challenges in registering players due to ongoing financial issues, prompting the club to implement a series of financial strategies, including the sale of future television rights. These financial difficulties were significant enough to result in the departure of star player Lionel Messi in 2021.
