Amorim Excited for Man United’s Future

Despite Manchester United’s challenging position in 14th place in the Premier League as they enter 2025, head coach Ruben Amorim remains “very excited” about the potential for improvement in the coming year.

The Red Devils suffered a disappointing 2-0 home defeat to Newcastle on Monday, marking the first time since September 1962 that the club has experienced five league losses in a single calendar month. This latest setback adds to a troubling streak of four consecutive defeats across all competitions, leaving United with six losses in their last eight matches.

In a New Year’s Eve message on the club’s official X account, Amorim expressed his optimism, stating, “I know it will take a lot of hard work from everyone to get there, but I am very excited about where we can go together in 2025.”

Amorim is still grappling with the fallout from Erik ten Hag’s dismissal in October, and his team currently sits seven points above the relegation zone. The prospect of a relegation battle has been acknowledged by Amorim, who described it as “a possibility.” Nevertheless, he is committed to continuing with the 3-4-3 formation, despite the squad’s struggles to adapt to the new system.

“Of course, I didn’t choose the players specifically for these positions, but I already knew that,” he said. “I understand they have a lot of difficulties because they spent two years playing one way and are now trying to play another.”

Amorim noted that he did not have the advantage of a pre-season to implement such a significant tactical shift, which has hindered progress. “I think the players are losing everything, the small things that we try to work on in training,” he explained. “After one goal, they lose everything because we don’t have the base; we don’t have time to build the foundation to cope with difficult moments, so it’s really hard right now.”

United will face a daunting challenge to start 2025, as they travel to take on league leaders Liverpool on Sunday in what is widely regarded as one of the fiercest rivalries in English soccer.
