In a promising start to his managerial career at Manchester United, Ruben Amorim witnessed his team score just 81 seconds into their match against Ipswich Town on Sunday. However, the encounter ended in a 1-1 draw against the struggling side, currently sitting third from the bottom in the Premier League.
Marcus Rashford opened the scoring for United, tapping in a cross from Amad Diallo at Portman Road, marking an ideal beginning for Amorim. Despite the early lead, United was unable to maintain their advantage, conceding an equalizer to Omari Hutchinson just before halftime.
“It’s a tough league — I already knew that, but you really feel it here,” Amorim remarked. “The intensity of the opponents and the atmosphere in the stadium were palpable. However, I believe we started very well.”
Amorim, who left his position at Portuguese league leaders Sporting Lisbon to take over from the dismissed Erik ten Hag, made several key decisions that paid off early in the match. He opted for his preferred 3-4-3 formation, positioning Diallo as a wing-back, which led to the opening goal. Rashford, selected to lead the attack over strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, has primarily played as a winger and has struggled with form over the past two seasons, resulting in his omission from the England squad.
“It has been tough on them,” Amorim said of his players adapting to new roles. “They had to learn different positions in just two days. They tried — that’s all we can ask for.”
Looking ahead, Amorim acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead for United. “It will take a long time,” he stated. “Let’s not focus solely on winning the title; that is the ultimate goal. Instead, we should concentrate on the small details and building a team and environment capable of achieving that aim.”
