The UConn men’s soccer team, currently with an 8-3-4 record, will look to bounce back from a 4-2 loss to Providence as they prepare to play St. John’s (6-5-4) this Saturday afternoon.
Historically, the matchups between these two Big East teams have been intense. In their last encounter on November 4, 2023, UConn triumphed in overtime, winning 2-1 against the Red Storm.
St. John’s is coming off a 1-0 victory against Seton Hall, and they aim to secure more wins in the conference. The Huskies will need to keep an eye on key Red Storm players, including junior forward Miguel Diaz, who has scored 11 points this season, and midfielder Tyler Morck, who has nine points.
UConn Head Coach Chris Gbandi discussed the team’s need to find ways to win close games. He acknowledged the players performed well against Providence, but noted that the opposing team made crucial plays at the end. “Those are the games you have to find a way,” he said in a recent team interview.
The Huskies have faced challenges in generating shots on goal and penetrating their opponents’ defense. Recently, sophomore Mikah Thomas stepped up during the match against Providence, scoring his first collegiate goal. Thomas equalized in the second half with a scissor kick into the top left corner, following an assist from Max Gummesson.
“Mikah’s been doing well for us,” Gbandi remarked. “Defensively, he’s doing well, and for him to get a goal like that was so important to us.”
The game will kick off at 2 p.m. at Belson Stadium in Queens, New York. Fans can watch the match live on FloFC.
