Former world number one Ashleigh Barty believes the next generation of Australian women players is in excellent hands. The 28-year-old, once one of the top players in women’s tennis, retired unexpectedly at the age of 26 in 2022.
Since Barty’s retirement, no Australian player has won a Grand Slam title. However, she recently expressed hope that this dry spell could soon end. Barty noted that the upcoming players are training with her former coach, Craig Tyzzer, whom she considers the best mentor for young talent in Australia.
“My former coach Craig Tyzzer is now working with the next generation of Aussie girls. They couldn’t be in better hands,” Barty told WAToday. She highlighted several promising young players, including Emerson Jones, Taylah Preston, and Liv Gadecki. Barty also expressed her desire to see Ajla Tomljanović return to form this summer, adding, “I always love watching her play.”
Barty pointed out that many Australian players are competing in singles, doubles, and mixed events. She sees this as a great opportunity for the Australian public to enjoy watching the new wave of talent. “Fingers crossed we have a few going deep into the second week,” she said.
During her career, Barty won three Grand Slam titles. She claimed the 2019 French Open by defeating the Czech Republic’s Markéta Vondrousova in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. In 2021, she won Wimbledon, beating Karolína Plíšková in the final with scores of 6-3, 6-7(4-7), 6-3. Barty’s final major title was the Australian Open in 2022, where she triumphed over America’s Danielle Collins in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6.
