Collin Deere from Byrd High School has won the Shreveport Times online poll for Football Athlete of the Week. This poll is sponsored by Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission, and Cosse and Silmon Orthodontics.
Deere is a standout fullback for the Yellow Jackets. He is the first Byrd player to win this award in the 2023-24 school year. The sophomore has made a significant impact on his team this fall, highlighted by several impressive runs during a 31-21 victory over Natchitoches Central last week.
Deere received 36,571 votes, which is 63.8% of the total 57,331 votes cast. He beat 14 other candidates, including Brandon Haggerty from BTW, who finished in second place with 14,707 votes, or 25.6%.
In the game against NCHS, Deere achieved a career-high of 144 rushing yards on 25 carries and scored three touchdowns.
“Collin is a strong, talented, and smart player,” said Byrd coach Stacy Ballew. “He has performed extremely well this season and continues to improve.”
Other nominees for this week’s poll included Ahmad Hudson from Ruston, Gage Aguilar from Plain Dealing, Noah Hall from Huntington, Rimarria “Pooh” Davis from Haughton, Owen Smith from Natchitoches Central, Brady Pine from Parkway, Braedon Robertson from North Webster, Porter Neal from Minden, Randy Robinson from Bossier, Zamarion Booker from Mansfield, Xavier Rawls-Stromile from D’Arbonne Woods, Julius Moss from Calvary, and Seth Mangrum from Glenbrook.
These athletes were nominated based on their recent performances or recommendations from their coaches. The Times poll is posted each Monday at shreveporttimes.com, featuring new student-athletes in high school sports other than football.
The online poll runs through Thursday evening. It includes athletes from northwest Louisiana competing in various sports, such as volleyball, cross country, swimming, cheerleading, basketball, soccer, wrestling, powerlifting, indoor and outdoor track, baseball, softball, golf, tennis, bowling, gymnastics, and fishing, while those sports are in season.
