Wayne Rooney has been dismissed as the head coach of Plymouth Argyle after just seven months in charge, the club announced on Tuesday. The 39-year-old former England and Manchester United striker was appointed in May but leaves with the team sitting at the bottom of the Championship, having recorded only four wins in 23 matches this season. His tenure concluded with a 2-0 defeat to Oxford United on Sunday, marking Argyle’s ninth consecutive game without a victory.
“Plymouth Argyle can confirm that the club and head coach Wayne Rooney have mutually agreed to part ways with immediate effect,” the club stated. “We would like to thank Wayne and his team for all their efforts and wish them well for the future.”
Rooney’s appointment at Plymouth followed a brief 83-day stint at Birmingham City, where he was unable to prevent the team’s relegation from the Championship last season. He has also managed MLS side DC United and Derby County.
In the club statement, Rooney expressed gratitude to the board, staff, players, and fans for their support during his time as head coach. “I wish them all the best for the future,” he said.
Rooney, who had a celebrated playing career that included five Premier League titles and a Champions League victory, is also recognized as England’s most capped outfield player, with 120 appearances.
Following Rooney’s departure, assistant coach Kevin Nancekivell and club captain Joe Edwards will take charge of the team for Wednesday’s Championship match against Bristol City.
