The Youngstown State University volleyball team faced a tough challenge against Northern Kentucky University on October 4-5, suffering two losses. The defeats extended the Penguins’ losing streak to five games, while the Norse celebrated their second consecutive win.
In the first match, Northern Kentucky won in four sets, with scores of 25-18, 18-25, 25-23, and 25-18. Despite the loss, several Penguins achieved personal milestones. Sophomore Gabriela Machin recorded a career-high 16 kills, while junior Abbie Householder led Youngstown State with 17 kills.
The match was competitive, with the Penguins leading in total attempts at 169 compared to Northern Kentucky’s 155. Youngstown State also had the edge in service aces, earning five, while Northern Kentucky managed four. The teams were close in assists as well, with YSU accumulating 49 assists to NKU’s 47.
However, Northern Kentucky’s defense proved crucial late in the match. The Norse recorded 12 blocks, while the Penguins had eight. Graduate student middle blocker Allie Siefke led NKU with six blocks.
Youngstown State struggled with attack errors, tallying 32 compared to Northern Kentucky’s 19. Despite having more kills overall, the Penguins could not capitalize on their offensive opportunities.
In the second match on Saturday, the teams continued to battle. This time, the match went to five sets, with the Norse winning 3-2. The set scores were 25-21, 25-7, 25-15, 25-17, and 15-11. Householder again led YSU with 23 kills, while NKU’s Ava Hoying contributed 14 kills.
The Penguins displayed a balanced attack, with aces coming from fifth-year setter Isabel Schaefbauer, fifth-year defensive specialist Nyia Setla, and junior outside hitter Bianca Giglio.
Looking ahead, Youngstown State will return to the Beeghly Center for four consecutive home matches. Senior Kiyah Franklin expressed gratitude for the support of their fans. “I love our fans because they are always hyping us up. They always know when to be at their loudest and then when to stay in their place,” she said. She also acknowledged the swim team’s support at games.
Franklin emphasized the need for focus during the upcoming home games. “We’re excited about all of our matchups in the new arena, but we can’t let all the home games get to our head. We still need to lock in and take it one game at a time so we can stay on track,” she stated.
The Penguins are eager to bounce back as they prepare to face Wright State University on October 11-12. Friday’s match is set to begin at 6 p.m., followed by Saturday’s game at 2 p.m.
