The tennis world is mourning the loss of Lea Pericoli, a legendary player and fashion icon, who passed away at the age of 89. Known for her flamboyant style both on and off the court, Pericoli was a 27-time national champion and a trailblazer in tennis fashion during the 1950s and 60s.
Pericoli’s impact extended beyond her athletic achievements. She is credited with revolutionizing tennis attire in a conservative era, often appearing in short dresses adorned with feathers and frills. Her outfits were originally designed by Teddy Tinling, a British player turned fashion designer, and attracted as much attention as her exceptional skill on the court.
Italy’s current top tennis player, Jannik Sinner, shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, posting a photo of himself with Pericoli. “A great lady and legend of Italian tennis,” he wrote. “A special moment I’ll remember forever.”
Pericoli’s illustrious tennis career included 27 titles across singles, doubles, and mixed doubles national championships. She reached the fourth round of Wimbledon three times, in 1965, 1967, and 1970, cementing her legacy as one of Italy’s greatest players. She held the title of Italy’s top player for 14 years, and her dedication to the sport saw her playing until the age of 40.
Her influence in tennis continued long after her playing career. Pericoli became a well-known TV presenter and journalist, further solidifying her place as a beloved figure in the world of sports.
Former Italian tennis star Flavia Pennetta also expressed her sorrow, writing on Instagram: “This morning we all received bad news. You left, Lea, leaving a big void in all of us.”
Pericoli’s legacy as both a tennis champion and a fashion pioneer will live on, remembered by the global tennis community for her unmatched contributions to the sport.
