The 2024 Presidents Cup, held at Royal Montreal, experienced a notable drop in television ratings compared to the previous edition at Quail Hollow Golf Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.
On Sunday, the final day of the tournament, 1.37 million viewers tuned in to NBC. This marks a 28% decrease from the 1.89 million viewers who watched the final day in 2022. The decline was even more pronounced on Saturday, where all-day coverage preceding college football on NBC attracted only 1.21 million viewers, down 36% from 1.89 million in 2022.
To put these figures in perspective, the NFL game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Los Angeles Chargers drew a staggering 24.1 million viewers on CBS. Similarly, the Thursday night football matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants, available solely on Amazon Prime, attracted 16.2 million views. In comparison, the Sunday Presidents Cup ratings were nearly equal to Fox’s NFL Kickoff pre-game show (1.2 million) and the second game of the WNBA Playoff series between the Minnesota Lynx and Phoenix Mercury (1.2 million).
The Presidents Cup’s viewership also pales in comparison to major golf events. The final round of the 2024 Masters, despite a 20% year-over-year drop, still garnered 9.58 million viewers. The final round of the 2024 U.S. Open, featuring a high-profile matchup between Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy, attracted a combined audience of 5.9 million on NBC and Peacock.
