A Promising Career Cut Short

Griffin, a 6-foot-6 forward, entered the NBA in 2022 after a standout season at Duke, where he was selected as the 16th overall pick by the Atlanta Hawks. As a rookie, Griffin averaged 9 points per game, known especially for his sharp 3-point shooting. He had notable performances, including two 24-point games, and made 12 starts during his first season.

However, Griffin’s second year in the league was plagued by injuries and reduced playing time. He appeared in just 20 games before being traded to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Nikola Durisic, the 43rd pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.

Struggles and Decision to Step Away

Griffin’s performance in the Summer League with the Rockets failed to meet expectations, and after being waived, he accepted a $250,000 buyout, according to reports. Despite his young age and potential, Griffin explained that he felt a calling toward ministry and was ready to let go of his basketball career.

“I believe that leaving basketball will allow me to serve the Lord with all my heart and dedicate all my time to ministry,” Griffin said.

Griffin’s retirement surprised many, given his early success in the NBA, but his decision reflects a rare move in professional sports. The son of Milwaukee Bucks head coach Adrian Griffin, he finishes his career with an average of 7.5 points and 1.9 rebounds per game across 92 appearances with the Hawks.

A Higher Calling

While his time in the NBA was brief, Griffin’s choice to step away for a higher purpose has earned him the respect of fans and teammates. His buyout with the Rockets opens up a roster spot ahead of the 2024-25 season, but Griffin’s legacy in basketball will now be defined by his commitment to his faith.
