The Boise State women’s volleyball team announced on Friday that it will forfeit its match against San Jose State scheduled for Saturday.
The university did not provide a specific reason for the forfeit. A brief statement on the school’s website stated, “Per Mountain West Conference policy, the Conference will record the match as a forfeit and a loss for Boise State. The Broncos will next compete on Oct. 3 against Air Force.”
San Jose State University is mentioned in a lawsuit regarding Title IX violations, with one of its players listed as a plaintiff. The university also did not clarify why Boise State forfeited the match. In a statement to KTVU, they said, “We are operating our program under the regulations of both the NCAA and the Mountain West Conference. Our student-athletes are in full compliance with NCAA rules and regulations. San José State volleyball did not play its scheduled home match against Boise State on Saturday, Sept. 28. Per Mountain West Conference policy, the Conference will record the match as a forfeit for Boise State in conference play.”
Idaho Governor Brad Little praised Boise State’s decision not to play in a tweet, although no further details were given by either team.
This is not the first time a team has opted out of competing against San Jose State. Earlier this month, Southern Utah chose to play only two of its three scheduled matches at the Santa Clara Tournament, skipping the game against SJSU. The university stated, “The Southern Utah University volleyball team has opted to compete in just two non-conference games at the Santa Clara Tournament this weekend. The Thunderbirds are eager to make the most of these matches and continue building momentum for a successful season.”
Currently, Boise State holds an overall record of 8-5 and is 0-1 in the Mountain West Conference.
