Navy triumphed over Army with a score of 32-5 in Rugby East action on Saturday.
The long-standing rivalry took center stage at the Prusmack Rugby Complex, where a lively crowd filled the stands. Navy, the favored team, delivered what many considered their best performance of the season.
The Midshipmen quickly gained an advantage, thanks to a penalty goal from Roanin Krieger. Scrumhalf Michael Strehle scored the first try, allowing Navy to maintain their momentum throughout the match.
“We executed better in all areas today,” said Navy Director of Rugby Gavin Hickie. He highlighted the team’s improvement after a previous game against Penn State, where they struggled in the red zone and failed to convert attacking lineouts. “We put it together.”
Aidan Gerber’s try extended Navy’s lead to 15-0, with Krieger successfully converting. That score marked the end of the first half.
In the second half, Tanner Russell, who has been recovering from an injury, made a significant impact once again. He scored his second try in as many weeks, increasing the lead to 22-0. Avion Ganse, a standout player for Navy, assisted Drew Baublitz for Navy’s fourth try, and Krieger’s conversion brought the score to 29-0.
Krieger added another penalty goal before Army managed to score late in the match, preventing a shutout.
Overall, this victory showcased an impressive performance from the Rugby East leaders.
