Is Kai Cenat Really Quitting Streaming for Basketball?

The online streaming world has been buzzing with speculation after popular streamer Kai Cenat hinted he might quit streaming to pursue a professional basketball career. The surprising statement came 46 hours into his intense marathon of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, leaving fans confused.

Although unusual, drastic career changes aren’t unheard of in the entertainment world. However, it’s rare for a top streamer to abandon their platform, especially for something as competitive as professional basketball. Despite the shock, some believe there could be some truth to Kai’s claim.

As of now, there’s no solid evidence to suggest Cenat is genuinely leaving streaming for basketball. Instead, it seems more likely that the 22-year-old is building anticipation for an event tied to the NBA, possibly to coincide with the 2024 NBA season, which kicks off in early October.

During his marathon stream, Kai said: “Until further notice, I’m quitting streaming, okay? I’ll no longer be streaming. You may ask, what am I doing? I’m now completing phase two of being a professional basketballer. You might be like, what the f***? But don’t laugh. I get drafted in a few days—I’m in the draft. I’m in the lottery, so don’t laugh… I will be in a professional basketball league.”

He later echoed this claim on social media, posting a “goodbye” message to his followers on X (formerly Twitter), further fueling speculation.

While the NBA’s 78th draft happened back in June, Kai’s mention of a draft doesn’t align with the current NBA schedule. However, the G League, the NBA’s minor league system, holds player drafts around this time each year, which could be a possible link.

Now that Cenat has completed his FromSoftware game challenges, including Elden Ring, Bloodborne, and Sekiro, he might be planning something new to keep his fans engaged. Similar to fellow streamer IShowSpeed, who has expanded his content to include international stunts and fan interactions, Kai may be exploring fresh opportunities to maintain his audience’s interest going into 2024.

Kai also has some basketball experience. He played in this year’s NBA Celebrity All-Star Game, although his performance—one missed shot and a single block—was widely criticized.

Although it’s highly unlikely that Kai will walk away from his lucrative streaming career to play professional basketball, fans are not dismissing the possibility just yet. Only time will tell what the next chapter holds for this streaming star.
