Jannik Sinner of Italy has reached the semifinals of the 2024 US Open, despite recent controversies surrounding him. The Italian player, who faced scrutiny after two doping tests earlier this year, has proved his resilience on the court.
Sinner, who has been in excellent form throughout the season, continued his impressive performance with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over fifth-seeded Daniil Medvedev. This victory sets up a semifinal clash against Jack Draper, who is also making his first appearance in this stage of a Grand Slam.
“Obviously in the beginning, it was a bit of a tough situation,” Sinner said about the pre-tournament issues. “But day by day, it got better. I’m happy with how things are going. Let’s see what I can do in the semis.”
Sinner, who has a 32-2 record on hard courts this year and a 21-2 record at the majors, played a strong match despite losing the second set. He managed 31 winners against 38 unforced errors and improved his performance in the final sets with 20 winners and only 11 unforced errors.
Medvedev, who was attempting to reach his fifth US Open semifinal, fell short after making 57 unforced errors and winning only 42 percent of his second serve points. His performance was marred by 24 errors on his usually reliable backhand side.
“Was definitely not happy with the way I played in general,” Medvedev said. “There were good moments, but also many mistakes. I felt tight at the end, and I couldn’t correct my errors.”
Sinner wrapped up the match in two hours and 39 minutes. He has spent just 11 hours and 17 minutes on court this tournament, which could be advantageous as he aims for his second major title and first at the US Open.
“I’m happy with how I handled the situation,” Sinner said. “It was a tough match against a strong opponent. I’m very pleased with the outcome and looking forward to the semifinals.”
