The Pacific Nations Cup clash between Tonga’s ‘Ikale Tahi and Fiji’s Flying Fijians promises to be a thrilling contest as the two teams celebrate 100 years of rugby rivalry. Aisea ‘Aholelei, CEO of the Tonga Rugby Union, emphasized the importance of the match, highlighting the centennial celebration and the significance of hosting a Tier One nation like Fiji. “Preparation has been good. We are making sure everything is set for Friday. It’s a big occasion for Tonga, and having Fiji here, especially after seven years, is huge,” said ‘Aholelei.

The Fijian community in Tonga is eagerly anticipating the game. Jokini Sivo, president of the Fijian community in Nuku’alofa, stated that about 400 Fijians are excited to support their team. The community will welcome the team with a traditional ‘sevusevu,’ a Fijian kava ceremony. Sivo expressed enthusiasm for the match, noting the strong cultural ties between Fiji and Tonga. “Rugby is very important to us. The atmosphere here is full of excitement and anticipation,” he said.

Sivo, who is torn between supporting Fiji and Tonga due to personal connections, predicts a close game. “Both teams have prepared well, and the match will be highly competitive. Fiji’s flair and agility might give them an edge, but Tonga will have the advantage of playing at home,” he added.

‘Aholelei noted that Fiji is the favorite, having recently defeated Manu Samoa 42-16, while Tonga suffered a 43-17 loss to Samoa. Tonga needs a win to stay in contention for a top spot in the Pacific pool. The top two teams from this weekend’s matches will advance to the semi-finals in Tokyo next weekend.

The ‘Ikale Tahi are in a rebuilding phase with new players and a new coaching staff. “We’re hoping for the best with our current squad. The Flying Fijians are a Tier One nation and can compete with any top team. We need to focus on our strengths and utilize them effectively,” said ‘Aholelei.

Crown Prince Tupouto’a, the heir to the Tongan throne, will be in attendance for the match. Kick-off is scheduled for 3 pm Tonga time, with a packed and enthusiastic crowd expected at Te’ufaiva Stadium.

In other news, Japan and the United States will face off in the Asia Pool decider to determine the top team, with both already qualified for the semi-finals.
