Basketball NZ Faces Global Interest in Tall Blacks Coach Position

Basketball New Zealand (BBNZ) is experiencing significant international interest in the Tall Blacks head coach role, a shift influenced by the global nature of basketball. As BBNZ searches for a successor to Pero Cameron, who resigned last month after five years, CEO Dillon Boucher reported being “overwhelmed” by the volume of foreign candidates.

The previous requirement for the national coach to be based in New Zealand has been lifted. Boucher explained that the role could now be filled by either a New Zealand-based coach or someone from abroad who can be available during the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) windows.

Boucher emphasized that BBNZ has been transparent about the role’s expectations and compensation. “We’ve been open throughout the process to ensure candidates fully understand what the role entails,” he said. “We’re pleased with the quality of applicants.”

Cameron’s departure was anticipated by BBNZ, who had been aware of his intention to seek a professional coaching position. Cameron has since joined the Ningbo Rockets in China.

With a new four-year cycle beginning, Boucher sees this as an ideal time to appoint a new coach. The Tall Blacks’ next matches are scheduled for November, and Boucher aims to finalize the appointment by early October.

The new coach will receive a four-year contract, with Boucher acknowledging that changes in the coaching landscape might affect their commitment. “We need someone dedicated but flexible, as circumstances can change quickly,” he noted.

BBNZ’s goals include not only immediate success but also long-term development. “We aim to succeed in Oceania and Asia championships to pave the way for future World Cup and Olympic appearances,” Boucher said. “We are also focusing on building a team for the 2032 cycle.”

The departure of Cameron may lead to changes in the assistant coaching staff. Boucher mentioned that while New Zealand has strong talent, they are open to the new coach’s preferences in assembling the support staff.

The Tall Ferns also face a coaching transition. Natalie Hurst has served as interim coach since May, following Guy Molloy’s departure. Boucher praised Hurst’s performance and said the next steps will be decided later this year.

BBNZ’s high-performance program has undergone significant upgrades, including new leadership roles and enhanced resources. “We have the best resources we’ve ever had,” Boucher said. “Our program is improving, and we’re starting to see positive results.”

Overall, BBNZ is confident in the progress and future of its basketball programs.
