Tennis-Player Commentators Shine at US Open

Nick Kyrgios and Chris Eubanks are making headlines at the U.S. Open, not for their play but for their roles as commentators.

Kyrgios, a quarter-finalist in 2022, is providing court-side commentary for ESPN and engaging with critics on social media. The Australian has been vocal in his opinions, despite struggling with injuries and playing only one tour match since October 2022.

“I’m always going to be outspoken,” Kyrgios said. “It’s hard to disagree with me because I’ve played against all the top players and beaten them.”

Kyrgios, who mentioned in December that he might have only a few years left in his career, has not shied away from controversy. He recently suggested coaching Coco Gauff after her fourth-round exit, critiquing her coach Brad Gilbert, who is also an ESPN commentator.

Additionally, Kyrgios has expressed his desire to interview Italian player Jannik Sinner. Sinner, who faced a doping controversy before the tournament, was cleared of wrongdoing despite failing two drug tests earlier this year. Kyrgios criticized the decision on social media, arguing it showed double standards.

Sinner, who plays his semi-final against Daniil Medvedev on Wednesday, responded to Kyrgios’ comments by saying, “Everyone is free to say everything.”

When asked about his preferred interview subjects, Kyrgios mentioned Sinner, saying, “I think we would have an interesting chat given everything going on.”

Meanwhile, Chris Eubanks, who exited the tournament in the first round, swiftly transitioned to his broadcasting role. Eubanks, who wore a suit and tie instead of tennis gear, went viral after a lighthearted moment with Coco Gauff at the practice courts.

“It’s weird being interviewed by you,” Gauff joked to Eubanks, her Olympic teammate.

Eubanks, who reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals last year, aims to maintain a positive relationship with players he will see throughout the year. “I want the players to feel comfortable around me,” he said. “I don’t want them to think of me as just the media guy.”
