The 4th Edition of the Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament will offer a total prize pool of N32.5 million. This announcement was made by Edo State First Lady, Betsy Obaseki, at a press conference in Benin.
The tournament is set to take place from October 2 to October 13. It will feature 14 teams, including two from Benin Republic.
The winner will receive N10 million. The second-place team will earn N7 million, while the third and fourth-place teams will get N5 million and N3 million, respectively. Each of the remaining 10 teams will receive N750,000 as a consolation prize.
Mrs. Obaseki emphasized that the tournament has become a key event for advancing women’s football in Nigeria. It also serves as a platform for empowering young girls and supporting grassroots sports development.
This year’s tournament will include a seminar titled “Say No to Teenage Pregnancy and Child Marriage.” The seminar aims to raise awareness about these issues, especially in rural areas, and to combat gender-based violence.
To ensure the tournament’s long-term success, a Board of Trustees with private individuals will soon be established.
Mrs. Obaseki also highlighted that three players from Edo Queens—Comfort Folorunsho, Chioma Olise, and Goodness Osigwe—are currently representing Nigeria at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia. She noted that several international players from previous tournaments are now excelling in top global clubs.
