Karolina Muchova is captivating fans at the U.S. Open with her innovative tennis style, which she says makes the game more enjoyable for her. The Czech player, known for her all-court play, defeated French Open and Wimbledon runner-up Jasmine Paolini 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the quarter-finals.
Muchova prefers a diverse approach to the game, often opting for net play over the baseline rallies typical in modern tennis. “I enjoy changing things up and having fun on the court,” Muchova said. “I like to play at the net and vary my game, rather than just relying on forehands and backhands.”
Her distinctive style drew attention from 18-time Grand Slam winner Chris Evert, who commented that Muchova “plays like a guy.” Evert later apologized for her remark after receiving backlash from players online. Evert had explained that men typically have stronger serves and better volleys, which she felt applied to Muchova’s play.
Returning from a 10-month wrist injury, Muchova is pleased to challenge conventional trends in women’s tennis. She admitted she doesn’t heavily rely on data to analyze opponents, preferring instead to observe their recent matches and adapt during play.
“I watch a few matches to pick up some clues, but it’s hard to spot weaknesses against these top players,” Muchova said. “I focus on how I feel and adjust my tactics as the match progresses.”
Muchova will next face Beatriz Haddad Maia, aiming to continue her impressive run at the tournament.
