Orioles Seek Confidence Boost Against Struggling White Sox

The Baltimore Orioles are focusing on rebuilding their confidence during a six-game homestand this week, despite holding a strong position in the American League East. On Monday, they made a strong start by routing the Chicago White Sox 13-3 in the series opener, and they hope to carry that momentum into Tuesday night’s game.

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde acknowledged the importance of the win, stating, “This second half, we haven’t had many games like this. Hopefully, this gives our offense and hitters some confidence.” Hyde noted that improved performances could positively impact the team’s mindset heading into each game.

Despite recent struggles, the Orioles (80-59) have won three of their last four games. Facing the MLB-worst White Sox (31-108) presents a valuable opportunity for Baltimore to solidify their standing. In Monday’s game, the Orioles overcame an early 2-0 deficit, with their offense taking charge and the pitching staff finding its rhythm. “Once we got into that bullpen, the bats were really good,” Hyde said.

For the White Sox, Monday’s loss marked their 11th consecutive defeat, the third time this season they’ve endured a losing streak in double figures. Interim manager Grady Sizemore commented on the team’s struggles, saying, “We had some good at-bats early, but we didn’t capitalize on some of our opportunities. It wasn’t our best game. We have to be better, especially against this team.”

While the White Sox continue to search for positive signs, the Orioles are making strategic adjustments. Hyde has placed shortstop Gunnar Henderson back in the leadoff spot, where he immediately made an impact with a first-inning home run on Monday—his 34th of the season. “Back in the leadoff spot, did a great job of getting the momentum back on our side,” Hyde said.

Outfielder Austin Slater has also provided a boost, giving Anthony Santander a chance to rest after the team’s recent road trips to Los Angeles and Colorado. “I wanted to get Santander off his feet from playing the outfield,” Hyde explained.

Looking ahead to Tuesday’s game, both teams will start rookie pitchers. The Orioles will send left-hander Cade Povich (1-7, 6.58 ERA) to the mound for his 12th start. Povich struggled in his last outing, allowing five runs and 10 hits in just 3 1/3 innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Orioles have lost five of the last six games in which Povich has pitched.

The White Sox will counter with right-hander Nick Nastrini (0-6, 7.04 ERA), who is coming off a strong performance last Thursday, where he held the Texas Rangers to one run over six innings. Despite the solid outing, Nastrini still took the loss.

The Orioles hope to capitalize on their recent success and continue building momentum as they push towards the postseason.
