Scott Robertson on Why Sam Cane is Crucial for All Blacks Against Springboks

Coach Scott Robertson has emphasized the importance of former captain Sam Cane for the All Blacks in their upcoming match against the Springboks in Johannesburg. Cane, who last played in the 2023 Rugby World Cup Final, will start for the All Blacks for the first time since that game.

Cane told RugbyPass earlier this week that he harbors no personal feelings about this Test. He is simply eager to face the world champion Springboks once again at Ellis Park, known for its challenging conditions.

The 2015 Rugby World Cup winner made his return to international rugby recently, coming off the bench in New Zealand’s game against Argentina in Auckland. Cane performed well, leading in completed tackles.

This match marks the second stage of Cane’s return to Test rugby. He is expected to play a key role in helping the All Blacks as they aim to achieve greatness under Robertson before he retires at the end of the year.

Cane will wear the No. 7 jersey on Saturday, joining Ethan Blackadder and Ardie Savea in a strong back row. Dalton Papali’i is unavailable due to injury, which has opened up the spot for Cane.

“Sam has been outstanding off the field. This is his chance to be the experienced Test veteran we need in this tough environment,” Robertson said on Thursday.

“Dalton has a minor thumb injury, which is why he’s missing this Test. We believe this lineup and combination will work best for this game.

“Ethan is in great form, and Ardie Savea will be alongside him. It’s a well-balanced loose forward trio.”

The All Blacks’ lineup for this Test is largely expected, with few surprises. Tamati Williams replaces the injured Ethan de Groot at loosehead prop, and Tupou Vaa’i is chosen over Sam Darry at lock. TJ Perenara will start at scrum-half, Jordie Barrett at inside center, and Beauden Barrett at fullback.

Veteran players like Ofa Tu’ungafasi and Anton Lienert-Brown are also set to contribute off the bench. Robertson believes that the team’s experience is crucial for this high-stakes match.

“It’s a legendary venue, and having experienced players is important. They will help us navigate the tough moments of the game,” Robertson said.

“The composure and experience they bring will be vital. They know what it takes to succeed in such challenging conditions.”
