A teenager who suffered cardiac arrest during a rugby game was airlifted to safety on Tuesday evening, thanks to quick actions by paramedics and bystanders.
The incident occurred around 6:00 PM at the Naka Bulls Rugby Club, where a 16-year-old boy suddenly went into cardiac arrest during a match. Xander Loubser of Best Care Emergency Medical Service reported that the situation was critical.
“Our team, equipped with Advanced Life Support and a specialized Cardiac Unit, responded immediately and performed life-saving interventions according to Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) protocols,” Loubser stated.
Due to the swift response of both the paramedics and bystanders, the boy was successfully revived. He was then airlifted by Netcare911 to a facility capable of providing the critical care he needed. Loubser mentioned that nearby hospitals were unable to accommodate the boy in their ICUs, making the airlift necessary.
“We extend our thoughts and prayers to the boy’s family during this difficult time. The coordinated efforts of our two ambulances and the teamwork among our staff played a crucial role in managing this emergency effectively,” Loubser added.
He emphasized the importance of bystander CPR, noting that immediate action can greatly improve the chances of survival in cardiac arrest cases. “We encourage everyone to learn CPR and be ready to respond in emergencies,” he said.
Loubser also expressed gratitude to the team and the community for their quick response, highlighting how collective efforts can make a significant difference in life-threatening situations.
