Nadal Overcomes Norrie to Reach Bastad Quarterfinals; Fils and Auger-Aliassime Advance

Bastad, Sweden — Rafael Nadal, the unseeded veteran, staged a dramatic comeback to defeat No. 5 seed Cameron Norrie of Great Britain 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday, securing a place in the Nordea Open quarterfinals. After a solid start, Nadal was down 1-4 in the second set but won the next five games to close out the match. He finished with 22 winners and just seven unforced errors. Nadal, who is reaching his first quarterfinal since January, will next face No. 4 seed Mariano Navone of Argentina. Navone advanced after a 6-4, 6-2 victory over India’s Sumit Nagal. Hamburg Open, Germany — French No. 5 seed Arthur Fils reached the quarterfinals with a 7-6 (3), 6-2 win over Serbian Laslo Djere. At 20 years old, Fils saved six of seven break points and joined an elite group of players who have reached multiple Hamburg quarterfinals before turning 21, including Novak Djokovic and Mats Wilander. He will face No. 2 seed Holger Rune of Denmark, who won 6-4, 6-3 against Argentina’s Marco Trungelliti. Top-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany overcame Frenchman Hugo Gaston 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, and No. 8 seed Zhizhen Zhang of China defeated Italy’s Flavio Cobolli 6-1, 7-6 (5).

Swiss Open Gstaad — No. 3 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada advanced to his fourth quarterfinal of the season with a 7-6 (6), 6-2 win over Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann. Auger-Aliassime, who is hunting for his first clay court title, saved two set points in the opening set and will next face 2018 champion Matteo Berrettini of Italy. Berrettini, seeded sixth, won 6-4, 6-2 against Daniel Elahi Galan of Colombia. In other matches, Brazil’s Gustavo Heide defeated No. 2 seed Ugo Humbert of France 6-7 (2), 6-2, 6-3, and Frenchman Quentin Halys overcame Lukas Klein of Slovakia 6-3, 6-7 (7), 6-4.

Infosys Hall of Fame Open, Newport, R.I. — No. 2 seed Marcos Giron rallied from a set down to beat Benoit Paire of France 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. Giron hit eight aces and capitalized on Paire’s nine double faults to secure his quarterfinal spot. He will face Australia’s Alex Bolt. In other action, No. 3 seed Alex Michelsen defeated Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-4, 6-4, despite Kovacevic’s 12 aces. Reilly Opelka also advanced by defeating Mackenzie McDonald 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
