Rookie guard Caitlin Clark set a WNBA record with 19 assists for the Indiana Fever in their 101-93 loss to the Dallas Wings on Wednesday in Arlington, Texas. Clark broke the previous single-game assist record of 18, held by Courtney Vandersloot of the New York Liberty, set on August 31, 2020, when Vandersloot played for the Chicago Sky.
Clark’s record-breaking assist came in the final moments of the game. With the Fever trailing 93-90, she drove into the lane and found Kelsey Mitchell on the left wing for a game-tying three-pointer with 2:22 left in the fourth quarter.
Despite Clark’s historic performance, Dallas (6-19) scored the game’s final eight points, snapping a three-game losing streak. Alongside her 19 assists, Clark contributed 24 points and six rebounds, though she also recorded six turnovers. The Fever (11-15) saw their two-game winning streak come to an end.
Clark, 22, is averaging 17.1 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game in her debut WNBA season after being selected first overall out of Iowa in April’s draft. Her previous career high in assists was 18, achieved during a college game on January 25, 2022, when she led the Iowa Hawkeyes to a 107-79 victory against Penn State.
