The second day of the Major League Baseball draft began with the Oakland Athletics selecting Rutgers shortstop Joshua Kuroda-Grauer as the first pick of Round 3 on Monday. Following Sunday’s first two rounds, which included 74 picks, Rounds 3 through 10 unfolded on Monday.
The draft commenced with the Cleveland Guardians picking Oregon State second baseman Travis Bazzana. Teams showcased their drafting strategies, with the New York Yankees notably using their first five selections on right-handed college pitchers, including Vanderbilt’s Greysen Carter in the fifth round. Carter’s impressive fastball can reach speeds of up to 103 mph.
Mississippi State outfielder Dakota Jordan, ranked the top player available after the first day, slipped to the San Francisco Giants as the 116th overall pick in the fourth round. Ranked No. 34 on MLB Pipeline’s big board, Jordan chose to focus on baseball over football, having played wide receiver. Over two seasons in Starkville, he amassed 30 home runs, 23 doubles, and 112 RBIs.
In the seventh round, the Houston Astros selected South Alabama outfielder Joseph Sullivan. Sullivan’s late grandfather, Pat Sullivan, was the 1971 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from Auburn, who later played six NFL seasons and coached at TCU and Samford before passing away in 2019.
The draft concludes on Tuesday with the final rounds, 11 through 20.
