Former French Open champions Jelena Ostapenko and Barbora Krejcikova are primed for an exciting clash on Wimbledon’s grass after both players secured quarter-final berths in contrasting styles on Monday.
Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open winner, demonstrated her dominance with a swift 6-2 6-3 victory over Yulia Putintseva, sealing the match in just over an hour under the Court One roof. The Latvian 13th seed, known for her aggressive play, unleashed 29 winners and showcased formidable form, having dropped only 15 games throughout her first four rounds.
“I feel like I’m playing more my game, and especially in deciding moments I’m just going for the shots. I don’t care if I miss it,” Ostapenko remarked confidently after her commanding performance.
In contrast, Barbora Krejcikova, the 2021 Roland Garros champion, faced a tougher challenge against American Danielle Collins. Overcoming Collins’s resilience and a leg injury that required a medical time-out, Krejcikova triumphed 7-5 6-3 in an hour and 42 minutes. The Czech player broke Collins’s serve decisively after the medical break to secure her spot in her first Wimbledon quarter-final.
Reflecting on her achievement, Krejcikova acknowledged the significance of her experience at Wimbledon, particularly in doubles, and expressed her excitement about progressing further in the tournament.
“It’s an advantage that I’ve played here a few times. Not so much in singles but doubles a few times. It’s a magic place and it’s a dream to be here,” Krejcikova commented, looking ahead to her upcoming match against Ostapenko.
